When we tested the Kershaw Chive in 2002 we found it to be the fastest and easiest opening knife ever! Since then, manufacturers have integrated this new Power-Assisted technology into many of their new models. But what is a semi-automatic knife exactly, and how does it work ...

NEED FOR SPEED
EXAMINING THE KERSHAW ASSISTED
BLADE DEPLOYMENT SYSTEM ...

With manufacturers producing semi-automatic knives in increasing numbers, we thought it might be a good idea to explain just how these knives work. We appreciate that Buck, Camillus and SOG also produce this type of model, but lets start with Kershaw's prize-winning system ...

What Is Speed-Safe?
Speed-safe is Kershaw's patented, technologically advanced semi-automatic assisted-opening system. It is probably the single most important development in knife design since Spyderco introduced us to the one-handed opening blade in the 1980's.

How Does It Work?
The heart of Kershaw's system is it's torsion bar. In the closed position, this pre-tensioned piece of metal helps to keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened accidentally. During the opening procedure initiated by the user, the torsion bar moves along it's half-moon track, and effectively takes over - or mechanises - the process of deploying the blade. Thanks to the Teflon coated bearings, the blade opens smoothly and locks into position with the military precision of a Swiss watch. The whole opening process takes just a fraction of a second.

Are They Any Good?
Absolutely First-Class! You can thank American custom knife-maker Ken Onion for the inspirational design, and each knife is made in America to exacting standard's by Kershaw. Speed-Safe knives come complete with the peace-of-mind offerred by Kershaw's lifetime warranty, they are designed to last for a generation (at least).

Is It Legal?
There are many unique features that make Kershaw Speed-Safe knives quite different to fully automatic knives, or Switchblades. Speed-Safe models do not deploy with the push of a button or any other device prohibited by law, nor do they utilise a coiled spring to power the blade, or operate using gravity. Speed-Safe knives fall fully within the boundaries of UK legislation.

Is It Safe?
Kershaw Speed-Safe models are very safe indeed. In fact, not only are they much easier to use than a regular blade, but they are also much safer too. During the opening process (when most injurys occur), the users hands and fingers are clear of the blade. And all Third-Generation Kershaw knives have a secondary safety lock built-in, to keep the blade firmly closed when not in use.
